A gentle word of warning...

If you are in the market for a Great Dane, but are put off by the price of one from an ethical and reputable breeder, please don't be tempted to go "bargain shopping".

Buying a Great Dane puppy or cross of unknown origins is fraught with pitfalls. Being a giant breed, a great deal of care and expense goes into producing  and raising a Great Dane of good quality. Buying a cute puppy from a backyard breeder (BYB) for a few hundred dollars less will be tempting, but might not be an economic purchase in the long run. Medical expenses for a giant breed dog quickly runs into the thousands, and this is why quality of the puppy matters!

An ethical and registered breeder will already have spent thousands (many - yes!) health testing, showing and caring for their dogs and breeding stock, and investing in a stud fee from compatible and breed-enhancing lines, to produce healthy, long-lived and exemplary Great Danes.

Whilst no one can guarantee anything in life, buying a puppy from someone who can't show you health testing results from both parents (hip and elbow scores, heart echocardiogram results, and thyroid testing) should be questioned. Some established and reputable breeders know their lineage going back many generations, and may not test. But buyer please beware, and feel free to ask lots of questions. They should also ask you lots of questions.

If you are determined to get a puppy or dog quickly or cheaply, please opt to foster or adopt from Great Dane Rescue & Rehoming. Many breeders also have adult dogs that they consider placing in pet homes, that would make excellent pets.
